“Think of a sleepy metropolis. One that has been built up through the ages and harnessed the wisdom of a thousand lives”

I wanted to spend a couple of minutes with you outlining what Sleepy Capital is, in a little more depth.

Sleepy Capital was originally a blog created in 2017, focused on providing investment ideas and personal finance insights. It provided readers with information that would allow one to invest well and sleep well in doing so. However, there are [thousands] of investment idea and personal finance blogs. There are also only so many personal finance topics to talk about—and most have been covered. After years of stagnation and let’s call it, “hibernation”, Sleepy Capital has re-invented and rationalized itself.

Sleepy Capital is a place. Think of a sleepy metropolis. One that has been built up through the ages and harnessed the wisdom of a thousand lives to create the sprawling capital city that it is. That city sits, sleepily yet happily in remembrance with what it has built. Though like any city, it is a complex adaptive system that is continuously interacting, growing and changing to form an integrated whole. As such, Sleepy Capital is a place that captures this dynamic and covers knowledge of the past and present, and looks to the future.

Attaining Worldly Wisdom

Our lives are busy. There is little time to really hone-in-on improving your knowledge, being more effective and thinking better. We don’t give enough time to remembering the past and capitalizing on what better people have already figured out. That’s why I am trying to make it easier for you to gain knowledge and get better. Sleepy Capital is one place to do so. We study worldly ideas and deliver them to you through thoughtful articles, spanning topics as old as time or as new as the future.

Worldly describes people who have knowledge of many topics or experience in many areas. The idea is to use various disciplines to solve a problem. Without models from multiple disciplines, you may not achieve your full potential in business and in life. Worldly knowledge has become ubiquitous with many of the teachings of Charlie Munger, the Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway.

“What is elementary, worldly wisdom? Well, the first rule is that you can’t really know anything if you just remember isolated facts and just try to bang them back. If the facts don’t hang together on a latticework of theory, you don’t have them in usable form. You have got to have models in your head. And you have got to array your experience—both vicarious and direct—on this latticework of models. You may have noticed students who just try to remember and pound back what is remembered. Well, they fail in school and fail in life. You have got to hang experience on a latticework of models in your head.”

A Lesson on Elementary, Worldly Wisdom As It Relates to Investment Management & Business.
Charlie Munger, May 5, 1995

Worldliness is not a state of being but a pursuit, and Sleepy Capital as a means to pursue it.

The Sloth

Sleepy Capital’s logo and mascot, the sloth, signifies a long-term mindset. Sloths are slow but are very determined animals. Learning a little bit and getting a little bit better each day, compounded over years, can change who you are. There is a saying out there that change happens slowly, and then all at once. That’s why maintaining a long term mind-set is imperative. Sleepy Capital will try to curate that mind-set for you. Back to sloths–they also tend to be funny and whimsical. While personal improvement and attaining worldly wisdom is serious—it can also be fun. Lastly, sloths are very intelligent animals and they apparently sleep 18 hours a day.

If you are visiting Sleepy Capital for the first time, give it a try and subscribe at www.sleepycapital.com. It’s a free newsletter delivered to your inbox that shares enduring ideas. Each Sunday, I share a Knowledge Nightcap, which includes a short message covering one idea from the past, one idea on the future, and one question to sleep on.

I look forward to learning with you and hope to bring some value to your pursuit of knowledge.
